Biographical Sketches of Keynote Speakers
Dr. Deborah Loewenberg Ball is professor of mathematics education at the University of Michigan. Her work draws on her many years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher. She investigates efforts to improve teaching through policy, reform initiatives, and teacher education. Her publications include articles on teacher learning; the role of subject matter knowledge in teaching and learning to teach; endemic challenges of teaching; and the relations of policy and practice in instructional improvement.

| Dr. Hyman Bass is the Roger Lyndon Collegiate Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Michigan. His research publications cover broad areas of algebra. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Bass is past president of the American Mathematical Society, and is currently President of the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction. He collaborates with Dr. Deborah Ball and her research group on the teaching of elementary school mathematics. He has helped to build bridges between diverse professional communities. |

Dr. Bernard L. Madison is Director for the Supporting Assessment in Undergraduate Mathematics project and Co-Director of the Preparing Mathematicians to Educate Teachers project, NSF-funded national Mathematics Association of America projects. Dr. Madison has served as Chair of the Mathematical Sciences Department at the University of Arkansas and dean of the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. He has conducted research in topology and algebra and has authored numerous publications on mathematics, mathematics education, and science policy. |
