Opelika High School receives technology grantArticle from the Opelika-Auburn News Opelika High School was recently selected to receive a Malone Family Foundation technology grant through the Transforming East Alabama Mathematics- TEAM Math- partnership program at Auburn University. The grant was available by application to the 15 school systems in Eastern Alabama participating in TEAM Math. The Malone Family Foundation project that funds the grant is geared toward improving math scores in grades six through 12. Opelika High School will receive graphing calculators for each student to use in math classes, as well as materials for calculator-based labs and calculator-based rangers. In addition, the school will receive school wide access to Geometers Sketchpad and Fathom software programs to be used mainly in geometry and statistics courses, OHS Principal Dr. Stan Cox said. The grant also funds half-day workshops for math teachers at the high school to learn new ways to incorporate technology into the classroom. The first workshop will be held Dec. 1, Cox said. “The sooner teachers become familiar and can use materials, the sooner they can use them in the classroom,” he said. TEAM-Math partners Auburn University and Tuskegee University with more than a dozen school systems, including Opelika, Auburn, Lee County, Phenix City, Chambers County, Russell County, Tallassee City, and Tallapoosa County. The goal of TEAM-Math is to provide students in kindergarten through 12th grade new ways to apply and understand math concepts to ultimately improve math education and scores in East Alabama. This is the third year Opelika High School has participated in TEAM-Math, which has resulted in an overall increase in OHS math scores at the high school, Cox said. “On the graduation exam, math test scores are our strongest scores,” he said, noting that last year 95% of Opelika High School students passed the math section of the state-mandated high school graduation exam. bharvey@oanow.co / 737-2546
