Three school districts join TEAM-Math partnershipSchools in Barbour County, Bullock County and Eufaula City join with others throughout East Alabama as the 2005-2006 class of TEAM-Math schools. The addition of these three school districts expands the TEAM-Math effort to seven county and eight city school systems in eight Alabama counties. TEAM-Math is a partnership of school systems, Auburn University and Tuskegee University, whose goal is to improve mathematics education in East Alabama. Through this approach, students will be better able to understand, utilize, communicate and appreciate mathematics as a tool in everyday situations in becoming life-long learners and productive citizens by Transforming East Alabama Mathematics (TEAM-Math). TEAM-Math strives to help students better understand and appreciate mathematics. Through facing “real-world” problems which they can relate to, students have shown a better retention of math skills and can better approach similar problems in the future. The program is now in the second year of a five-year, $9-million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Math and Science Partnership. The addition of the three new school systems was made possible through a recent $400,000 NSF grant extension. The higher education partners include Auburn University’s College of Education and College of Sciences and Mathematics, along with the university’s Outreach Office; and Tuskegee University’s Department of Mathematics and Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
