TEAM-Math Teacher from Dean Road Elementary Selected as 2007 Alabama No Child Left Behind American Star of Teaching

Leann White, a fifth-grade teacher from Dean Road Elementary, was selected by the U.S. Department of Education as the 2007 Alabama No Child Left Behind American Star of Teaching. The honor is given to one teacher in each state and Washington, D.C. Winners were selected from more than 4,000 nominations based on success in improving academic performance and making a difference in students’ lives.

White, who has been teaching for seven years, is particularly known for her creative ways of teaching mathematics to fifth-graders. She uses real-world experiences in her lessons both in and outside the classroom. "I try to center my teaching around application (and) let it not just be from the textbook or within the walls of the school," she said.

White has been very active in TEAM-Math, participating in over 175 hours of professional development provided by TEAM-Math and serving as a TEAM-Math school teacher leader.
