About the Summer Institute

The TEAM-Math Summer Institute is a component of the intensive professional development offered by TEAM-Math in which university professors, education researchers, and practicing teachers provide their expertise in helping teachers learn that "it's not just what you teach; it's how you teach!" Teachers in grades K-12 from participating schools attend Summer Institute for two weeks their first year and then attend a one-week follow-up training the next year. Other professional development opportunities including quarterly meetings and special workshops are available throughout the year. The program is built on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics principles, the Alabama Course of Study: Mathematics, and best practices gained from research. Integral to the program are high expectations and support for all students along with an understanding of what students know and need to know. Assessment is an important instructional component. Technology and cooperative groups are also key elements.

The professional development experience includes discussion and modeling of teaching strategies, mathematical problem-solving, research on teaching mathematics, and implementation of instructional materials. There is also an opportunity for school-level and district-level strategic planning. Click on the links below to view the purposes for the various components of TEAM-Math training:
